Q. | Is ARCHI-LOG compatible with Windows 7, 8 or 10? |
R. |
YES! ARCHI-LOG has been tested successfully with the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
We believe that ARCHI-LOG will work as well with the future Windows version since Microsoft has the obligation to keep its OS (operating system)
compatible with the thousands of programs that have not yet been converted. We also have a special version of ARCHI-LOG that will work on Windows Server R12 from a remote access. Call us if you need this version. |
Q. | Why can I not read ARCHI-LOG's help files anymore? |
R. | See this document. |
Q. | How can one obtain an electronic version of the updates for ARCHI-LOG? |
A. | Users of the DOS or Windows versions of ARCHI-LOG or users of the transfer module for the RDAQ can download the most recent update from this link |
Q. | How do I enter a document or an image into ARCHI-LOG from a scanner? |
A. | Your images must first be saved or copied into the X:\pagew3\Sxxx\images folder. You could also use sub-folders to store images for each of your fonds : X:\pagew3\Sxxx\images\p1 X:\pagew3\Sxxx\images\p2 etc. ( where Sxxx is your site number and X is your server disk drive letter) which would result in the grouping of your images according to their provenance. Next, to link an image to one of your descriptive units, either in the Biographical Sketch field, or in the Scope & Content field, open the editing window for one of those fields by clicking on the [...] button at its left and place your text cursor on a new line. Click on the [IMG] button which is found in the toolbox near the top of ARCHI-LOG's main window. This will open a dialog box with the title bar showing Define image caption(s) and insert IMG tags. Use the [Browse] button to naviguate to the folder that contains your images and other electronic documents and click on the [Select] button. Choose one of the images that will appear in the 2 - Select images to insert box. Use the [>] button to move this image to the box identified by the Choosen images caption on the right . Click on the filename of this image when its name appears in the Choosen images box and enter the caption for this image. Finally, click on the [Insert tag(s)] button to create the link to this image in the Biographical Sketch or Scope & Content field that is currently being modified. The link to an image will have the form <IMG src="file_name" title="legend_for_this_image" height="???"> while the link to any other type of document will have the form <A href="file_name"> legend_for_this_document</A>. Save the change being made in the edition window with the diskette-looking button and save all other changes being made to this current descriptive unit by clicking on the [Save] button at the bottom of the form. The Images tab will then display the image with its legend. |
Q. | How do I get the DOS version of ARCHI-LOG to work properly in a
Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 or Windows XP environment? These versions of Windows do not recognise changes that are made to the C:\autoexec.bat and C:\config.sys files! |
A. | These two files can now be found in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder.
Furthermore, the config.sys file has been renamed config.nt,
while the autoexec.bat file is not used any more. We have introduced changes in the ARCH.BAT batch file that starts ARCHI-LOG to make it aware of which version of Windows is present. Thus, this file will recognise the presence of those particular versions of Windows and will execute the appropriate instructions. Download and save this version of ARCH.BAT on your disk. |
Q. | The ARCHI-LOG/DOS software does not install correctly in a Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 or Windows XP environment. |
A. | Use the INST-NT.bat procedure
that is located on the installation disk of ARCHI-LOG. This batch file takes for granted
that you wish to install ARCHI-LOG in the \SHLM-AR folder on your local hard disk C:.
Accordingly, this procedure will not ask for a confirmation of the destination folder. To install ARCHI-LOG on a disk other than C:, install it first on C:, and then use Windows Explorer to move the \SHLM-AR folder to its new location. |
Q. | I get the message Too many files open while using the DOS version of ARCHI-LOG in a computer functionning under the Windows Millennium Edition operating system... |
A. | Windows ME does not use the config.sys file anymore.
In order to explicitly define a number of file handles greater than 30 (the
default value), one must add a line in the system.ini file. Execute the following steps:
|
Q. | How does one install ARCHI-LOG in a MS-DOS / W3.0-3.11 / W95 / W98 environment? |
A. | The installation of the DOS version of ARCHI-LOG is done in two steps.
First, you must transfer programs and initial empty data files from the diskettes to the hard disk of
your workstation, and then you must modify your Operating System (OS) environment variables to enable
the execution of ARCHI-LOG. Installation of ARCHI-LOG from diskettes
|
Q. | I get the message Too many memory variables while using ARCHI-LOG... |
A. |
The database engine of the DOS version of ARCHI-LOG uses a configuration file named CONFIG.FP that can be found
in the local C:\SHLM-AR folder and also in the X:\SHLM-AR folder ( where X: is the letter
of your server disk drive, if you have chosen to work in a network environment) to define the maximum
number of variables that can be used in the software. This file should contain the following lines : MVCOUNT=1024 ems=off resource=\shlm-ar _foxdoc='' _foxgraph='' You can modify the content of this file by choosing the UTILITIES module from the main menu, and then by choosing MODIFY PREFERENCES. |
Q. | IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SEARCHING |
A. | Users of ARCHI-LOG must be aware of some restrictions
about the search using the dictionary. It is possible to be unable to find such term as <Asselin-Limosi> or <Le Boutillier-Asselin> when searching simply for <Asselin>. To find <Asselin-Limosi>, one must enter <asselin*> as the criterion. The asterisk symbol (*) means that we wish to find all expressions beginning with "asselin", which also includes <Asselin-Limosi>. To find <Le Boutillier-Asselin>, one must search for <boutillier*>. This behavior is due to the fact that ARCHI-LOG stores in its dictionary all words that are delimited by a combination of spaces, comas, semi-comas or periods. Words attached with a dash (-) are stored as such. To find <Le Boutillier-Asselin> from <asselin>, one can use the full-text searching capability included in the form DESCRIBE FONDS AND COLLECTIONS. We are studying the possibility of changing the behavior of ARCHI-LOG such that words linked with a dash (-) be considered as separate words instead of a single entity as it is now. We will welcome any commentary on this subject. |
Q. | If you have a problem with ARCHI-LOG, other than those described above |
A. | If you have problems with ARCHI-LOG,
first try to re-index the files (UTILITIES module).
The re-indexation of files repairs many problems and also updates various counters used by
the INDEX+THESAURUS+AF module. Since version 1.74, the option NUMBERING NORMALIZATION in the UTILITIES menu offers a routine VERIFY FILE INTEGRITY that verifies the integrity of links between files. In the Windows version, the option MODIFICATION/ VERIFICATION OF THE UNIT NUMBER under the UTILITIES button of the main menu offers an equivalent function : VERIFY THE INTEGRITY OF LINKS USING THE UNIT NUMBER. Thus, all elements of the physical quantities file or the index file that make reference to a non-existant unit of description record will be identified. A way to correct this problem will also be offered. The ARCHI-LOG database files can be browsed and manipulated directly by FOXPRO or by ACCESS. If this is the case, the user must remember that he is responsible for the integrity of his data. It is always preferable to manipulate your data from a copy rather than from ARCHI-LOG's own database. If you have special needs, call us, we can give you some advice. |
